Democratic Governement
RDC Nepal’s intervention in democratic governance involves capacity building of societies to establish and adopt necessary policies and remove their conflicts peacefully within the existing legal order. This is a necessary condition for the rule of law along with the separation of powers and a legal system that ensures the respect, protection and fulfillment of basic human rights such as civil and political rights, and social, economic and cultural rights. It promotes civil societies based on the principles of equity, freedom, participation in decision making and accountability. It acts for the inclusion of the most vulnerable sectors of society. For the promotion of democratic values, it empowers women and minorities to ensure their representation in all levels of the Government and society as a whole.
Itinvolves and mobilizes the local community members in promoting the sustainability of democracy which includes an enduring capacity for: the separation of powers and independence of the branches of government; the exercise of power in accordance with the rule of law; the respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms; and, the transparency and accountability of a responsible civil service, functioning at both the national and local levels.
KEY STRATEGIES
We adopt the policies and practices that benefit the local community through:
- Increasing community participation in social affairs
- Participating in resource-use planning, decision making and promotion of human rights values
- Participating the civil societies and citizens to maintain accountability
- Assisting local community members in mitigating conflict
- Leveraging the stakeholders and other concerned authorities to encourage peoples’ participation in local governance
KEY INTERVENTION
- Anti–corruption:
We envision a nation free of corruption and abuse of responsibilities on the part of the common citizens and also of the government authorities. Therefore, our intervention enriches the knowledge of community members about the issues of good governance and we mobilize and participate them in the developmental activities so as to maintain public accountability.
- Conflict Mitigation:
Our approach to Conflict Mitigation involves implementing strategies to limit the negative aspects of conflict and to increase the positive aspects of conflict at a level equal to or higher than where the conflict is taking place. As it hinders in the process of development and reform, we apply full efforts to minimize the negative aspects and to create a just society by adopting the proper conflict management strategies.
iii. Human Rights Protection:
RDC Nepal is fully committed to the issues of human rights that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) has raised along with its simplicity of vision that causes it to be accessible to people of all ages, races, sexes and conditions. We take it for granted that capacity building and sensitization is the key to respect, protect and fulfill human rights. The main outcome we expect to bring through our human rights programs is strengthening respect for human rights and basic freedoms.
- Social Transformation:
RDC Nepal works for transforming societies by increasing peoples’ participation in public policy debate and decision making process. These works have their root in better understanding of national, regional and international human rights norms and mechanisms. We form and support Community Based Organizations to promote and protect human rights, and to influence the community members so that democratic practices are encouraged and reinforced.
